MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The last time Patrick White threw the ball in a game as much as he did Saturday against Villanova, he was a senior at Daphne (Ala.) High.
He was pitching.
"Throwing a lot of balls," he said, emphasizing the final word to suggest an inaccuracy that was nowhere to be found in No. 8 West Virginia's season-opening 48-21 football victory before a Mountaineer Field sellout crowd of 60,566.
White began his final season with the Mountaineers with a memorable performance, completing 25-of-33 - with five legitimate drops -- for 208 yards and five touchdowns. The attempts and completions were personal bests and the touchdowns were a team record at Mountaineer Field.
Pitt's Pete Gonzalez threw five at WVU in 1997 in a triple-overtime game. Marc Bulger's six touchdowns at Pitt in 1998 is the only total better than White's in school history.
